Hoosier Boys State invites not only students from all across Indiana to participate in this Week to Shape a Lifetime, it also presents to their parents and other responsible adults the opportunity to examine the quality of staff that makes the program work.  The following page may help accomplish that task--bringing HBS home while it happens.


Appointed at the end of Hoosier Boys' State (2007), Steve Bowman is now its director.  Steve is a member of The American Legion's Post 73 in Vincennes and the 7th District HBS enrollment chairman.  He is a retired educator (after 33 years) and a veteran of HBS for thirty-two (32) years.  Presently he is a part-time guidance counselor at North Knox High School.  Steve graduated from Vincennes Lincoln H.S., attended Vincenes Univerisity in 1967, served in the US Navy from 1968 to 1972.  He returned to college and took a BS degree in 1975, an MS in 1977, and an EdS ABD all from ISU.

 

 

 

 

Gary Twomey is the Associate Director of HBS as of 2007 as well.  He is now and has been the principal of the Junior High School at Washington, Indiana, since 1993.  Gary has been with HBS for thirty (30) years.  After graduating from Greencastle High School, he served in the US Navy from 1969 to 1973.  A graduate of ISU in 1978, he took an MS in 1978 and an EdS in 1986.

 

 

 Bob Riley is the Dean of Counselors at Hoosier Boys State.  Bob has a BS degree from Indiana State University and an MS degree from Butler University.  Bob attended Memorial Hight school in Evansville from which he graduated in 1966.  Having been a counselor, assistant dean, and now dean of counselors, he has been with HBS for thirty-eight (38) years.  In real life, he is a math teacher at MSD of Washington Twp. in Indianapolis.

 

 Jerry Wagenblast is the new Curriculum Director and Election Dean at HBS, and he is a professor of mathematics at Valparaiso University.  Jerry has been with the HBS Program for over forty (40) years.  He has served as counselor, assistant dean, and dean of counselors.  Jerry introduced lobbying awareness into our program curriculum twenty (20) years ago.  It is now being expanded to include a special school and a regular part of the legislative function in HBS government.

 

 

 Jim Phipps is the Director of Communications for Boys State.  After nine (9) years as an attorney and over twenty (20) years in education, he is currently retired, does consulting work, and teaches Spanish to adults.  After graduating from Van Buren H.S. in 1961, he served from 1961 to 1964 in the US Navy.  Jim graduated from DePauw in 1976 with a BA and an MAT in 1978.  Later he took an EdS in school administration (1986--IU) and a J.D. in 1988 also at IU (Bloomington).

 


Assistant Deans

The ADs teach the curriculum and supervise their respective counselors.

(photo in progress)      Jerry Baker returns for his third year with Hoosier Boys State, currently as an assistant dean and military advisor (US Air Force).  Jerry has a PhD, an MS, and a BS in agricultural engineering all from Purdue University.  He currently is the Director of Medical Records for Westminister Village at Terre Haute.  He graduated from Gertsmeyer Technical High School in Terre Haute.

(photo in progress)     William Broderick will be an assistant dean this  year, his 12th year in the program at HBS.  Bill is social studies teacher at North Central High School  (Indianapolis).  He graduated from Carmel H.S., going on to Miama University where he took a BA/BS degree in international relations, history, political science & comprehensive social studies.  Later,  Bill earned the MEd degree at Indiana Wesleyan.  He also has a law degree from  IU, Indianapolis.

(photo in progress)     Bart Cassida has a BA from DePauw University in mathematics, earth & space science.  He graduated from Cloverdale H.S. and is presently teaching math at Monrovia H.S.  Bart is returning this year as an assistant dean.  He has been with HBS for twelve (12) years.

(photo in progress)     Dan Henn is a Butler University graduate.  His academic experiences include graduate work in Louisiana and a Masters' degree in Education from Indiana Wesleyan.  Dan graduated from the Latin School of Indianapolis.  He is currently teaching at the Metropolitan School District of Warren Twp.  Dann has been with HBS for nearly twenty-five (25) years.  He is an assistant dean and a special schools instructor (speech school).      

Ted Schirr is an assistant dean in our program this year as well.  Ted has been a counselor for ten (10) years.  He is an educator with a degree from Oakland City University in math and secondary education.  Ted graduated from Pike Central H.S.

 

 

(photo in progress)     Another assistant dean this year,  Craig VanSoest is from Valpariso H.S.  He is presently going to Indiana University NW majoring in education.  He sells music for Barnes & Noble.  His first year with HBS was 2004 as a delegate and 2005 as a counselor and member of our staff.

(photo in progress)     Kevin Robertson will be our Band Director again this year.  Kevin presently works for the Franklin Twp. community School Corp. as a guest teacher.  He completed the high school diploma from Leto Comprehensive.  He has a BA degree from the University of Indianapolis in music education.  He is currently working on his Masters' degree.

    Jace McMullin will double this  year as an Assistant Band Director and counselor for the band city.  Jace came to the program as a delegate in 2005 and returned as a counselor two years later, in 2007.  Jace is studying music education at Mississippi State University.  He graduated from Griffith High School.

 

 


Counselors

There are four counselors (2 per city--32 in all) for each of the eight assistant deans (8 counties).  The counselors are with the citizens of their respective cities 24/7 and assist the ADs.  They are the first line of defense for their delegates and hold city meetings that help further the curriculum and instruction process and assure that the citizens follow the daily schedule.

                               Jon Bush is a graduate of Vincennes Lincoln HS and is currently working on a degree in pre-med biology and chemistry at Franklin College.  He was a delegate at HBS in 2005.  In 2007, Jon came to us as a counselor.

 

 

 

(photo in progress)     Chuck Progar started his tenure with Hoosier Boys' State in 1968 as a counselor.  He is a resident of Highland in Northern Indiana.  He is now a retired educator and returns to our program after a few years' hiatus.

 From Forest Park HS and Purdue University where he is majoring in computer graphics technology, Tyler Foerster will be a counselor with two-years' experience at HBS this year
