Assembly Speakers

Hoosier Boys' State provides special speakers for its assemblies.  This year HBS has tentatively secured the following personalities for its assembly programs:

Saturday, the first day, Max Julian of Post 31, a member of the HBS Board of Directors, will welcome the delegates to the 2010 Hoosier Boys State Program.  Mr. Julian will also introduce HBS Governor Seth Brown who will speak to the incoming students.

Saturday at 7:45 p.m. a former three-term mayor of Seymour, Indiana, and five-term former member of the House of Representatives in the Indiana General Assembly, Bill Bailey, will give our program's keynote speech.  Bill is a former boys' stater from Kentucky.  He has also been a counselor at Hoosier Boys' State for five years.  Currently Bill is president of the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce located in Seymour, Indiana.

Sunday at 8:00 p.m., June 13thScott Weyler, Chuck Mason, Gary Steinhardt, Jerry Baker, the American Legion Post 31 Color Guard, and Jim Phipps will present our flag folding demonstration and a reading in recognition of our Flag Day Celebration.

Monday morning (10:00 a.m.), June 14th, Trine University President, Dr. Brooks, will give a "welcome-to-Trine" presentation.

Tuesday evening (8:00 p.m.), June 15thDelegate Party Keynote Speakers will charge their respective parties with enthusiasm and direction.

Wednesday morning (10:00 a.m.), June 16th, delegates will witness the two governor candidates debate the issues.

Wednesday evening (8:00 p.m.) The assembly will receive Donald Van Der Moere II, Chief Deputy for the Putnam County Prosecutor's Office who will present the Oath of Office to the newley elected, 73rd Hoosier Boys' State Governor.  Don was also an HBS counselor for three (3) years.

Thursday at 8:00 p.m., the 17th of June, parents are encouraged to attend the HBS Talent Show performed by various and wonderfully talented delegates assisted by Scott Weyler and Chuck Mason as stage hands and members of the talent selection committee.

Friday, 10:00 a.m., 18 June 2010, Dawn Herring from Indiana Senator Richard Lugar's Office will discuss the military academies.

Friday evening at 7:00 p.m., the assembly will welcome Marty Justis of the Americanism Programs, The American Legion's National Headquarters, who will address the graduating delegates during the awards ceremony.  Again, parents and friends and other dignataries of the American Legion are welcome and encouraged to attend.



County Schools
Each Hoosier Boys' State county has an instructor (an assistant dean) and four (4) counselors (two for each city in the county.

 Ayers County will meet in Seculoff the assistant dean is John Evans
 Bole County will meet in Moyer the assistant dean is Scotty Weyler 
 Julian County will meet in Bucoff the assistant dean is Jerry Baker
 Kuhn County will meet in University Ctr. Apts.  the assistant dean is Dan Henn
 Napier County will meet in Wilson & Seculoff the assistant dean is Cary Hudson
 Ohl County will meet in Widmann the assistant dean is Bill Broderick
 Sweet County will meet in Moss & Widmann the assistant dean is Bart Cassida
 Titus County will meet in Wilson the assistant dean is Gary Steinhardt

Special Schools are so designated for the reason that they are provided as break-away enrichment programs outside but related to the regular curriculum.

GENERAL INFORMATION

 

SPECIAL SCHOOLS OF INSTRUCTION

 

The period from 1:00 P to 2:30 P on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday require all HBS Citizens to attend one of eight Special Schools.  The purpose of these schools is to educate citizens with specialized content.  You will select one special school and be required to attend that school for all four days.

 

MEDIA IN POLITICS – Will examine the influence and affect of the various media disciplines on political campaigning.  How politicians manipulate the various media outlets for their benefit and the benefit of their party will be explored.    The school will be held in Best Hall 105.

 

SCHOOL FOR PUBLIC SPEAKING – Will examine the skills necessary to organize ideas and clearly communicate a persuasive message will be emphasized.  The school will be held in Best Hall 103

 

SCHOOL FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT – Will examine the duties, obligations, and responsibilities of being an effective law enforcement officer.  Possible topics of discussion may include: specialized police units, investigative procedures, education and training of officers, identity theft, and displays of law enforcement equipment.  The school will be held in Ketner Sports Center.

 

SCHOOL OF LAW – Will examine the process of becoming a Lawyer/Attorney, specific legal issues, case law, civil law, criminal law, constitutional law, and various other topics related to the legal profession.  The school will be held in Fabiani Theatre

 

LEGISLATIVE SCHOOL – A State Representative/Senator will discuss the events, activities, and current legislative issues of the most recent General Assembly.  The school will be held in Best Hall 109

 

SCHOOL FOR LEADERSHIP – Leadership is inspiring and helping others to work towards a goal or objective.  Leadership skills presented: leadership characteristics and styles, goal setting, decision making, managing your time, and other pertinent topics.

The school will be held in Best Hall 229

 

SCHOOL FOR MILITARY CAREER/SERVICE – The HBS Military Rep(s) along with representatives of the various Branches of Military Service will present topics on: Academy applications, career options, life in the military, education options, and various other topics related to military service.  The school will be held in Best Hall 221

 

SCHOOL FOR LOBBYING TECHNIQUES AND PRACTICES – This course deals with legal methods to cause legislators to introduce or vote for laws favorable to a special interest group.  The school will be held in Best Hall 213
